Apple Core's Nick Grasso Finds That
There Is No Place Like Home

Long Beach, NY - In 19 games for Apple Core, defenseman Nick Grasso has recorded 2 goals and 14 assists and is currently 7th among league leading defensemen. However, several may ask how a player who was once listed as one of the most highly touted forwards in North America can wind up on Apple Core's blue line in the EJHL as a 20-year-old? One word: perseverance.

The Long Island native was once considered in the same breath with players like Pat Kane and Kyle Okposo, Nick Grasso was the real deal. He signed his National Letter of Intent with UMass-Amherst in 2005 and was then drafted into the OHL. Grasso decided to keep his eligibility and play in the USHL.

When he was 17-years old, Grasso was offered a roster spot on the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders as a forward. After a great training camp he began to feel very sick and lost 15 pounds. There was no answer behind the sickness and quick weight loss. He missed the first two months of the season as he battled through the mysterious illness. When he returned, he scored in his 2nd game and that same week signed his National Letter of Intent to UMass-Amherst.

"I didn't feel 100-percent but everything around me was going well, until I got real sick again the following week," said Grasso. "No matter how hard I pushed to come back I kept getting sicker."

That next week he developed a severe case of strep throat and his play began to diminish. The coaches, trainers, and doctors all ruled out mononucleosis. The coaching staff said it was part of the maturity process and he had to take better care of himself. This went on month after month and the coaching staff began to question his dedication to the game.

"That was the most frustrating thing about it all. I wanted to play this game so bad and no one knew what was wrong with me. Everyone thought that I didn't want to work hard and that I did not care."

He always felt tired and was then limited to a 4th line role. Grasso asked for a trade and was sent to Waterloo where he picked up 2 points in his first 3 games. After that season he met with the coaches at UMass and signed a deferment letter for 2007.

"I had no problem with deferring for a year," said Grasso. "Physically I did not feel ready to play college hockey. I knew that another year would help me step in and be an impact player for the following season."

Grasso decided to rest his body that offseason and take a month off. Once he began training and prepare for the '06-'07 season he felt sick once again. His parents sent him to a specialist and found out that he had tested positive for MONO which restricted him from heavy workouts for four months.

He was then signed by the Green Bay Gamblers but was in no shape to compete at the start of the season. In October of 2006, doctors informed him that he has been suffering from a severe case of re-occurring MONO.

"In October 2006 I was told that because I had a severe case of re-occurring MONO that I could feel symptoms and chronic fatigue for up to 8 months and I needed to take it slow until it ran its course."

Grasso spent the 2006-2007 season playing for the Jersey Hitmen in the EJHL so he can be close to home so doctors could monitor his condition. In November of ‘06 to make matters worse he received a call from UMass and was told that they have serious concerns about his illness and passion for the game and that they have withdrawn their offer.

"I was floored," said Grasso. "But as sick as I was I did not blame them for having doubts about my health but I knew that I could not quit. I went through so much and wanted to prove to everyone that I was still very passionate about hockey."

In March of 2007 Grasso was given a clean bill of health and was training with former Apple Core player Tad O'Had. He got his weight up to 185 pounds and was offered a spot on the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets in the USHL as a defenseman. It was his first season as a defenseman but was not receiving the ice time necessary to get the exposure he needed from college coaches. He was traded mid-season to the Alpena Ice Diggers of the NAHL where he was a star on the blue-line as he ran the power play and killed penalties.

"I like defense because I could step up on guys and catch them with their head down. Plus, you have more control of the play because everything is in front of you," said Grasso.

Grasso began the 2008-2009 season with Alpena but felt that it was time to come home and get the exposure he needed from the east coast colleges. His trainers told him to contact Apple Core head coach Chris Cosentino, a former teammate of O'Had.
“I decided that after being away from home for the last 3 years and talking to my trainers we all felt Apple Core would be the best fit and they were right," said Grasso. “I’m getting the opportunity to play in all situations. Coach Cosentino's confidence in me has given me all I need to be an impact player again. We have a young team and I am really enjoying the game like I always have.  Coach Cosentino, Coach Hellemeyer and the guys on the team are definitely a big part of that.  My goal and dream has always been to play D1 college hockey.”
“I admire Nicky’s never-give-up attitude,” said Apple Core Head Coach Chris Cosentino. “He has all the tools to be a Division 1 defenseman, but it is his ability to persevere that makes him so special.”
Grasso came on to the ‘Core in early October and made an immediate impact when he picked up a goal and 2 assists in New York’s 7-3 win over the New Hampshire Monarchs.
“Right from the start we knew we added a big-time player,” said Cosentino. “He has great hockey sense and vision on the ice. His maturity level carries over to the ice and it was something we were in need of.”
The team got off to a rough start but now we have the perfect core of players willing to get the job done. Over the last two months our team has unified and mproved in every aspect of the game,” said Grasso. “It has been fun to watch, and I truly believe that we can win a championship with this group. We dug a pretty deep hole for ourselves, but there is no doubt in my mind that we can climb out if we keep progressing towards a common goal.”

Apple Core EJ Team Invade
‘The Concrete Jungle’

Team Building Exercise Is Unforgettable Experience

New York, NY – The Apple Core EJHL team faced its first big challenge of the season – Manhattan. In a unique team building exercise, the twenty-five Junior ‘A’ players formed five even teams and each team was given one map of NYC and fifteen landmarks around the city. Once each team found the listed location they had to take a team photo in front of that landmark. The team who finished in the fastest time was crowned “2008 Apple Core NYC Challenge Champions”.

With fifteen players from outside the New York area, it was a great opportunity to explore the greatest city in the world, as well as, have a memorable experience with their teammates.

“It was a lot of fun,” said team captain Anthony Bitetto. “Not only were we able to see the city but we were able to really bond as a team. It is amazing how fast this team has become such a tight knit family.”

The team met at Madison Square Garden where they were greeted by head coach Chris Cosentino and assistant coach Vin Hellemeyer. The staff gave the instructions for the exercise and the teams went off to find their first destination – the site of the World Trade Center. Each team worked together to find the best way to hit all fifteen sites in the quickest time. Teams took several memorable photos and actually met a few celebrities along the way.

“The goal was to get the boys to learn to work together,” said head coach Chris Cosentino. “Everyone stuck together and created stories that they will remember forever.”

Every team finished with a respectable time but it came down to two teams sprinting to the final location in Central Park. The winning team consisted of John Kelly, Rui Encarnacao, Matt Maher, CJ Stellabotte, and William Brown.

“The day was awesome but it still had a competitive feel to it,” said assistant captain David Spadacene. “This was something that I will never forget.”

BITETTO TO LEAD APPLE CORE EJ TEAM

Spadacene To Don The ‘A’

Long Beach, NY – The NY Apple Core announced today that defenseman Anthony Bitetto will be named team Captain for the 2008/2009 season. Anthony tallied 2 goals and 6 assists in 17 EJHL games last season. Anthony began the ’07-’08 campaign on the Apple Core Jr. B Empire Team and was called-up to the EJHL team in October, where he scored against Syracuse in his first-ever EJ contest.

“Anthony is an individual who leads by example,” said Head Coach Chris Cosentino. “He has the respect of his teammates and I know he’ll do a great job.”

The Apple Core coaching staff also announced today that EJ veteran and Pittsburgh-native, David Spadacene, will be named Assistant Captain. The hard-nosed forward scored 6 goals and picked up 12 assists while splitting time with the Green Mountain Glades and Jersey Hitmen last season. David served as team Captain in ’06-’07 as a member of the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins of the Empire Hockey League.

“Spaddy brings a great deal of maturity and character into the locker-room,” said Cosentino. “He is an individual who can help us win games on his leadership skills alone.”

With Bitetto and Spadacene leading the charge this year Apple Core looks to take aim at their second EJHL title.
